A glycan microarray is a high-throughput tool for investigating the binding between glycans – polysaccharides or carbohydrates, such as heparan sulfate (HS) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) – and glycan-binding proteins (GBPs). As essential signaling molecules, glycans play key roles in a wide range of biological processes. HS is ubiquitous in extracellular matrix and basement membranes and influences immunological processes, cell adhesion and migration, inflammation, viral and bacterial infections, and cancer.
