Drug discovery and development
Drug discovery has come a long way in the last century, especially considering the discovery of drugs like penicillin. Penicillin was accidentally discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming after returning from holiday to find a mold growing in his petri dishes, which turned out to have antibacterial properties… and was developed into the first antibiotic used by doctors. Chemical libraries and artificial intelligence, among other technologies, are now used to find molecules that have promising properties and could be developed into an effective drug. There are many stages to the drug discovery and development process, from identifying a target compound to formulating a drug and conducting clinical trials, so it can take years to get a drug to market – if it even gets there.
