Looking back at 2021 with CoolLED

As we approach the end of 2021, there are plenty of positive events from this year to look back on, from new products to scientific discoveries and a growing CoolLED team!
Winner of the CoolLED Image in an Image Competition 2021 This year’s CoolLED Image in an Image competition involved many fantastic entries, from polarised snakes to animals in the skin. The winner of a CoolLED pE-300ultra Illumination System was Dr Sam Duwe (Advanced Optical Microscopy Centre, Hasselt University, Belgium) who found a fish head in an unstained tissue sample. The competition will be starting again in February 2022, so make sure to look out for your ‘Image in an Image’ for your chance to win!

New pE-800fura for supercharged calcium imaging and beyond! The big news this year has undoubtedly been the new CoolLED 8-channel pE-800fura Illumination System. Following the phenomenal success of the pE-800, CoolLED expanded this ground-breaking technology for the calcium imaging community by swapping in a 340 and 380 nm LED. The pE-800fura offers lightning-fast calcium imaging, pH monitoring, ratiometric fluorescence, FRET and everyday fluorescence microscopy.
147 published research papers featuring CoolLED Illumination Systems: Despite the continued challenges for researchers this year, 147 ground-breaking papers have made it through to publication, which are available to view at PubMed Central. World-leading experts have also shared information on topics such as Growing a Bio-Imaging Network in North America (Alison North), Understanding DNA replication dynamics in E. coli (Christian Rudolph), and Validating LED illumination performance with Plug-and-Play confocal technology (Maria Giubettini).
Welcoming Fraser, Elisa, Nathan & Flo to the CoolLED team! CoolLED is growing, and this year welcomed four new colleagues! Fraser joined in January and is in charge of ensuring projects run smoothly. Elisa is Product Characterisation engineer, and tests CoolLED Illumination Systems on microscopes to see how they perform. Nathan looks after the Andover HQ building, while Flo has joined Business Support team to help with administration activities.
