Immunology
Immunology is the study of organisms’ immune system, the complex network of biological processes that protect organisms from harm. The concept of immunology can be traced back to the plague of Athens in 430 BCE…
when it was noted that people who had previously recovered from the illness could nurse the sick without getting another bout of the disease. Immunological research has, of course, come a long way since then, and we now have a deeper understanding of the many roles the immune system plays in health and disease. Together, innate and adaptive immune responses can protect us from a whole host of insults, from cuts and bruises to infectious diseases and invasive cancer cells.
But immunological research can be applied to more than just clinical immunology – antibody technologies are utilized in many techniques, from western blots to flow cytometry.
