How to choose a microbiome standard

Written by Zymo Research

Technical variability in microbiome profiling methods can lead to significant variations in results. In order to control variability and to identify biases, many microbiome researchers are utilizing microbiome standards, also known as mock microbial communities. Furthermore, many researchers are beginning to adopt spike-in controls and true diversity references to expand their understanding of technical variabilities and biases. Although the use of these mock communities and controls is becoming standard practice, choosing one of the many available standards can be difficult.

This article acts as a how-to guide describing the different microbiome standards available and their appropriate applications.
