PromethION 2: Flexible, PromethION scale sequencing for every lab

Written by Oxford Nanopore

PromethION 2 (P2) devices maintain the flexibility associated with the larger PromethION devices from Oxford Nanopore Technologies, but in a compact, accessible form factor. Suitable for small to medium sized academic and research labs, as well as core labs and commercial service providers, they deliver the benefits of high-coverage nanopore sequencing to users with lower sample processing. Each flow cell has the capacity to deliver hundreds of gigabases of nanopore sequencing data and presents a convenient way to rapidly enable the coverage required for the sequencing of larger genomes. PromethION 2 devices are available in two different form factors:

  • P2 Solo: a sequencing unit for two PromethION Flow Cells, utilising computational resource within the GridION Mk1, or other suitable pre-existing compute, to quickly enable high-depth nanopore sequencing with minimal outlay
  • P2: a self-contained benchtop nanopore sequencer containing a powerful GPU and running two high-output PromethION Flow Cells

Why PromethION 2?

  • Easily deployable: quickly enable the ability to generate up to 290 Gb* of data per flow cell
  • Run only what you need: Two flow cell positions for on-demand, flexible sequencing
  • Cost-effective: generate an $800 human genome
  • No capital cost: pay just for consumables

Why nanopore sequencing technology?

Oxford Nanopore devices sequence DNA/RNA directly, which means the data is rich and can be streamed in real-time, to provide rapid insights. It’s possible to sequence short to ultra-long fragments of DNA for a truly comprehensive picture. The technology is fully scalable — from pocket to population scale.

With this new generation of high-performance nanopore-based sensing technology, Oxford Nanopore aim to bring the widest benefits to society through enabling the analysis of anything, by anyone, anywhere.
